Chrome moly rings seating.
The ring seating process is accomplished by actual metal to metal contact between the ring and the cylinder wall.
When rings are discussed it usually concerns the top ring only.
The cylinder pressure from 50 to 75 percent and eventually to 100 percent load will place additional pressure on the back side of the rings which will quickly establish the proper wear pattern for seating.
But all top rings are cast iron either plain or ductile.
As a result an economy ring set will likely require replacement in 50 000 to 60 000 miles compared to the 100 000 plus mile.
And the aterials typically used are cast iron moly chrome or ceramic.
Plain cast iron is a durable wear surface in normal operating conditions and is less costly than the moly or chrome faced ring.
Moly has a very high resistance to scuff.
Economy ring sets typically feature the same material formulations and designs as premium ring but do not have ring face coatings.
With today s rings especially moly faced versions this can be achieved in a very short period of time and certainly within 20 to 30.
As a result sometimes moly rings are a replacement for oem chrome faced rings.
